The Survey of Michigan Nurses has been supported by the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) annually since 2004 to gather information about the supply of nurses in Michigan. Information gathered from this survey is used to inform state and local decision-making about the recruitment, education, and employment status of the nurse population. The survey includes questions that focus on:
- License type
- Educational background
- Specialty Certification
- Employment status
- Geographic location of employment
- Current practice setting
- Length of time in practice
- Plans to continue practicing as a nurse
- Demographics
- Workplace Violence*
Nurses licensed in Michigan are divided into two cohorts, based upon the year in which they first received their license, and each cohort must renew their license every two years.
*The Workplace Violence section was added to the survey in 2020, based on feedback provided by the Nurse Survey Stakeholder group held in Fall 2019.
Michigan Nurse Licensure Data
The data presented were obtained from the Michigan Bureau of Professional Licensing and include all nurses who were registered to practice in Michigan. Historically, Michigan nurses were required to renew their license every two years no later than March 31st of the year their license expires. As such, each dataset included a cohort of nurses with newly renewed licenses and a cohort of nurses with licenses that are a year old. It is important to note that each dataset includes nurses who may not choose to renew their license when it expires. After renewal in March 2019, the renewal date will change to the initial licensure date. Anyone applying for licensure since 2017 has their initial licensure date as the renewal date.
